Pen Friend Requests
Prisoners on death row are living in extreme isolation. Generally, inmates exist 23 hours a day all alone in their cell. Cells on death row are mostly isolation cells, designed for housing prisoners for disciplinary reason only for a short period of time, not for permanent housing.
Contact to the outside world breaks this isolation and is very important to keep or develop a social life (and maintain sanity).
Therefore pen friends are immensely important for the prisoners.
We would be grateful if you would decide to write to a prisoner on death row. However, please make this decision only after good consideration. Before you start writing to a prisoner, please read our Good to know article.
Most of all prisoners read and write in English, if they understand only another language it’s noted.
In 2009 we established our PenFriendOffice to take care for the pen friend request. The following Flyer is meant for prisoners that would like to have a website with ALIVE e. V.: PenFriendOffice Flyer (pdf)

Remarks:
- These contents of the pen friend request pages are basing on what the prisoners wrote to us. On some pages you will find legal documents. All information about the case provided by the prisoners or their support groups is not investigated by ALIVE.
- On the “Legal Sites” you will find legal documents and there is an overview about the case.
- Only in regard of ALIVE campaigns we have researched the caser ourselves and therefore the provided information on these sites are basing on the legal documents.
- Many pen friend pages contain photos, often showing the inmate with family members and friends. These photos we got from the inmates. If you should find yourself on a page of your family member or pen friend and you disagree with publishing that photo, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and we will delete the photo.
