Campaigns

What does campaign mean?

In cases of blatant injustice - these are cases, in which the death sentence is too harsh according to international or even US law standards, because of the role in the crime (law of parties) or the criminal liability up to innocence cases - Alive offers special support within a campaign.

How does an inmate become a campaign?

If an inmate wishes direct support for the case, he (or she) can write to Alive and request a campaign. Then he will get a questionnaire. This questionnaire will give a first overview about the case and makes contact to the attorney. If the case is eligible for an Alive campaign, we get in touch to the legal representation of the prisoner and request the legal documents.

Then we view the documents and prepare a dossier, which is a summary of the case. This work is duty of the Alive board. Even though the board members are no US certified jurists, they have judicial knowledge gathered through many years of self-study.

This self-study contains - among other things - intense study of the US death penalty low and all relevant facts of the death penalty. Sources are - among others - the FindLaw Cooperation and the Death Penalty Information Center, Washington, DC. Also the study of precedence cases of the US Supreme Court. Petra E. Herrmann published in this connection a Legal Dictionary for "interested  lay-people", explaining terms of the US criminal law in German language. Reading trial transcripts and appeal writs up to countless witness testimonies helped to expand the theoretical
ly gathered knowledge.

However, we ALWAYS work together with the according attorneys and investigators/experts.

If the board assumes after studying the legal documents and after intense conversation with the attorney of the inmates that this case satisfies the criteria of a campaign AND we have the necessary resources to take a new case, the according dossier will be presented to the members meeting. The members decide about adopting an inmate as campaign. In urgent cases the board is able to do an emergency-adoption.

What is ALIVE able to do for campaigns?

ALIVE e. V. provides an detailed website to campaigns - with own name-domain - with information about the case. This website is a tool to get the case public to build up a support-team for the according inmate.

The inmate also gets flier with a summary of the case. He/She can get "business cards".

At all Alive events we hand out fliers und present our campaign cases to the public. If needed we prepared petitions.

All this service if of course free of charge for the prisoner.

The board is always in contact with the campaign prisoners and direct contact persons to them. Visiting campaign prisoners, their attorneys, family has highest priority at Alive trips to the US.

All other activities will be done after consultation with the inmates and his attorney.

Important Advice:

Because of limited resources we do not adopt any new campaigns currently.
